Our Carbon Footprint: A Closer Look at our 2023 GHG Report

Sustainability at Lamington Group is grounded in transparency – each year, we publish a detailed account of our emissions across our operations and assets.

In 2023, our data showed clear progress on our journey to net zero. By publishing this report we aim not only to be transparent about our own impact but to help shift the conversation in hospitality towards credible, science-based climate action.

Tracking Our Impact

The Greenhouse Gas Protocol is the leading global standard for measuring emissions, dividing them into three categories: Scopes 1, 2, and 3. Together, they capture the full carbon footprint of an organisation. Breaking down emissions by scope helps us identify key sources and focus our reduction efforts where they’ll have the most impact.

1. Scope 1 emissions – direct GHG emissions resulting from the combustion of, for example, fuels in buildings and from fugitive emissions from the use of refrigerants.
2. Scope 2 emissions  – indirect GHG emissions that result from third party procurement of electricity, heating or cooling.
3. Scope 3 emissions – the indirect GHG emissions that occur within our value chain, including emissions from our supply chain (upstream) or those from our customers (downstream).

In 2023, we reduced total absolute emissions by 5% from our 2019 baseline despite expanding our portfolio with room2 Belfast – reflecting the impact of our continued investment in design efficiency, electrification, and operations.

Combined Scope 1 and 2 emissions fell by 18%, aligned with our SBTi target, through phasing out gas and switching to 100% renewable electricity. While Scope 3 remains our largest emissions source, we achieved a 4% reduction year-on-year, including a 23% drop in guest travel emissions through better data and promotion of low-carbon transport.

Enabling Informed Choices: Emissions per Night

One of the unique metrics we report is kgCO₂e per room night, offering a transparent view into the impact of a night’s stay at each property. On average, our room2 hometels emit 61% less carbon per night, compared to a typical UK hotel.

By sharing this data, we empower guests to make more informed choices and challenge the wider industry to do the same.

Managing Unavoidable Emissions

While reduction remains our top priority, offsetting unavoidable emissions is part of our commitment to net zero. In 2023, we offset 129 tonnes of CO₂ through a reforestation project in Ghana, which aims to restore a total of 4,174 hectares of degraded forest and support local livelihoods. Our offsetting principles prioritise verified, nature-based carbon removal that have long-term impact.

To maintain trust and accountability, our data is audited annually by a third party. This year, our GHG inventory was independently verified by the British Standards Institute (BSI) in accordance with ISO 14064-1:2018.
